“Mirth in Misery”

This composition draws inspiration from an individual who, despite enduring an unbearably grim family history, found solace and purpose through the act of creating music. I was compelled to compose a piece that satirizes a world rife with absurdity, where, even in the midst of such misery, a spark of hope endures.

Movement I. “Disorder”

"Disorder" is a composition in which the composer strives to evoke chaos through tightly structured musical materials: a motif derived from the octatonic scale, rhythms based on the Fibonacci series and prime numbers, a broad spectrum of timbres created through varied techniques, and an extensive use of dissonant intervals. The unpredictable treatment of these elements offers the listener a mysterious, almost sarcastic, sonic experience that mirrors the absurdity of the world.

Movement II. “Black Humor”

"Black Humor" builds on the closing motif of the first movement, expanding it into the main material. In this movement, the composer uses axis-based harmony instead of traditional harmonic structures, creating shifting tonal centers and ambiguous tonal colors. Although primarily slow and lyrical, the piece explores the arco sound in detail, employing techniques such as sul tasto, sul ponticello, au talon, specific finger positions, and varied bow changes. Changes in tempo and rhythm add tension and narrative contrast, culminating in a return of the motif in a major key — a moment of fragile hope shining through the chaos.
